Expressive Language
Expressive language is spoken language and involves the ability to join words together using the correct vocabulary and grammar.
Written Language
Speech pathologists can also help children to improve the way in which they write and edit different types of written language
Receptive Language
Receptive language is understanding. This is your child's ability to understand the words they hear and/or read.
Higher Order Thinking Skills
Also called Higher Order Language Skills (HOTS). Higher order = reasoning. Language = use language to demonstrate understanding and to express HOTS
Articulation & Speaking Sounds
Articulation is the way we produce speech sounds. To produce sounds we use our tongue, lips, teeth, jaw and vocal folds.
Stuttering
Stuttering is a disorder in which the flow of speech (fluency) is interrupted. There are many different types of stutters.
Voice
Speech therapy is often required to teach the child appropriate vocal behaviour to decrease the nodules and prevent them from recurring.
Literacy
Phonological awareness, letter-sound correspondences, working memory – storing, reading & spelling.
Making an appointment
You do not need a referral to see a Speech Pathologist unless you are accessing funding from Medicare or using one of the government initiatives such as the “Better Start” and “Helping Children with Autism” packages.
